Biographical and Professional Information

As a research geologist and consultant, I specialize in finding all of the fun things in geology: diamonds, colored gemstones, gold, platinum, very old and deformed rocks and rare rocks that may host diamonds. And yes, I did find many treasures in Wyoming and Colorado including >2 dozen diamond deposits (with gems!), a whole new gold district west of Casper, two world-class gemstone deposits with giant iolites (water sapphire). One iolite gem weighed >24,000 carats (the largest ever found in the world)! But, just between you and me, I did leave some very large gems in the rock outcrop (because they were too big to carry). One was the size of a door (could easily top the scale at >million carats). But even more startling was some research I was working on (prior to my resignation from the Wyoming Geological Survey) of another iolite deposit that may have >1 trillion carats and potentially as many as 2.4 trillion carats of this gemstone (now multiply this by the value of the gemstone ~$30-150/carat).

I also found ruby, sapphire and kyanite gems, started two gold rushes and an opal rush (this opal deposit covers an area of >14 square miles!), discovered the first peridot gems in Wyoming (I recovered 13,000 carats from two anthills north of Rock Springs). I love to map. Over the years I spent most summers in a tent as I mapped old gold mines, South Pass, the Seminoe Mountains, Rattlesnake Hills, Copper Mountain, Leucite Hills, State Line, Cooper Hill and Iron Mountain. I met some wonderful characters. One was a caretaker at the Carissa gold mine at South Pass. While some people from Colorado were removing an old wooden door from the historic mill for the rustic wood, instead of confronting them, this recluse removed their car door for a later trade.

I authored >500 papers, books and maps and presented more than 400 lectures on finding mineral deposits, mining history and martial arts as a keynote speaker or invited speaker at various conferences and clubs. In 1992, I was the recipient of the American Association of Petroleum Geologist's President's Award for Excellence and the Wyoming Geological Association's Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Endeavors and Contributions. In 2001, due to the efforts of many people across the state, I was inducted into the National Rock Hound & Lapidary Hall of Fame & presented their Education Award. In 2004, the Wyoming Geological Association awarded me their highest honor: the association’s ‘Distinguished Service Award’ for outstanding endeavors & contributions to the work and progress of the association and understanding of Wyoming’s geology. You will find me listed in Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, 2000 Notable American Men, 5000 Personalities of the World, and others.

I not only find rocks, I also break them. I teach traditional martial arts & have the highest rank attainable in Okinawa Karate (10th degree black belt). I am the grandmaster of Seiyo Shorin-Ryu Karate & have trained in martial arts for 42 years and still love to see excitment on the faces of my students as they learn new ways to defend theirselves & build self-confidence. My greatest achievements are my students – most have turned out to be very productive members of society. Several international organizations have honored me: these honors have included 2004 Instructor of the Year, 2003 International Grandmaster of the Year, 2002 Grandmaster of the Year & 2001 International Instructor of the Year, induction into 14 Halls of Fame as well as Who’s Who in the 21st Century.

When I'm not breaking rocks, I sketch them - see http://danhausel.com

Speaking Engagements

I'm available to talk! When I was a state employee, I did these for free. But I resigned from the Geological Survey in 2007 (along with ~50% of the staff beginning in 2004) in protest of unethical treatment of the employees by the management. I now work as the US Exploration Manager for an Australian Diamond Company, and as a consultant for Canadian gold and a gemstone companies - so the director may have done me a favor.

I appeared on ICMJ's Prospecting & Mining Journal cover following discovery of several gemstone deposits in Wyoming including some that have a suite of spectacular gems (iolite, ruby, sapphire & kyanite). Two of these are arguably world-class gemstone deposits.
